A popular and collectable copper 'Cartwheel' Twopenny of George III, dated 1797. These copper Twopence coins were only struck in this year at the Soho Mint in Birmingham under Matthew Boulton’s innovative steam press. They are known as ‘Cartwheels’ because of the distinctive raiser rim as well as their significant weight and size compared to other circulating coinage issued before or since. The obverse features the draped bust of King George the Third, facing right. The reverse shows an image of Britannia in drapery, seated on a rock surrounded by waves, a warship with three masts in the distance. By her side is a shield bearing the Union Jack. The ‘SOHO’ mint mark is visible just below the shield. In her left hand she holds a trident whilst her right hand holds up an olive branch with 10 leaves. Both obverse and reverse are the work of Conrad Heinrich Küchler. These popular coins are highly sought after in high grades and represent a fascinating period in the history of English coinage.
