Bronze medal, awarded by the Science and Art Department if George Harwin in 1856. Obverse: left facing, youthful, diademed bust of the Queen with wavy hair tied back, one loose curl descending from knot. Lettering to truncation of bust attributes this to ‘W. WYON R.A.’. William Wyon was chief engraver to the Royal Mint from 1828 until his death in 1851. Versions of this medal were issued for decades. The legend around reads: VICTORIA BY THE GRACE OF GOD QVEEN’ with the date - ‘MDCCCLVI’ - in Roman numerals below. Reverse: six line inscription within wreath and beaded circles. Reads: ‘NATIONAL / MEDAL FOR / SVCCESS IN ART / AWARDED BY THE / SCIENCE AND ART / DEPARTMENT’. The Science and Art Department was a British government body, established as part of the Board of Traded in 1853 to promote design and technology education in Britain. The Department ran the National Art Training School which would become The Royal College of Art. This medal was awarded to a George Harwin - his name as well as the date is inscribed on the edge: ‘GEORGE HARWIN. NORWICH. STAGE 2B’. We have no further information about his subsequent career. This medal measures 55.00 millimetres in diameter and weighs 81.8 grams.
