Large bronze medal commemorating a visit by Queen Victoria to the City of London on 9 November 1837. Obverse: left-facing youthful portrait of Queen Victoria wearing earring and diadem, signed ‘J. BARBER’ (British medallist) on truncation. Legend around ‘VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA.’ with small lettering below reading ‘PUBLISHED . BY . GRIFFIN . & . HYAMS .’. Reverse: Fame (winged with trumpet), Britannia (helmet, shield and laurel wreath) and another female figure (holding a cornucopia) as well as the Lord Mayor or London, John Cowan, attending on the new Queen. Cowan, a prosperous chandler (candlemaker), was made a baronet in thanks for hosting the visit. The arms of the city appear above the interior scene as well as the word ‘WELCOME’. ‘I · BARBER · F ·’ below then ‘IN . COMMEMORATION · OF · HER / MAJESTYS · VISIT · TO THE · CITY / OF · LONDON · NOVE 9TH / 1837’. Around the bottom edge: ‘THE · RIGHT · HONOR** · JOHN · COWAN · LORD · MAYOR’. Diameter: 62.00 millimetres and weighs 111.00 grams.
