Fascinating penny minted in the name of Archbishop Wulfred with a possible unique spelling variation. Wulfred was the Anglo-Saxon Archbishop of Canterbury from some time before the year 805 until his death in 832. He’s one of small number of English bishops that issued coins in the middle Anglo-Saxon period. Wulfred didn’t add the king’s name to his coins, unlike his predecessors, perhaps because of his poor relations with Mercian monarchs, Coenwulf and Ceolwulf. Wulfred was also the first Archbishop to add his own portrait to the coinage struck in his name. This front-facing effigy showing a tonsured man appears on the obverse of this excellent example of his coinage within a linear circle. His office and name appear in the legend: ‘+ VVLFREDI ARCHIEPISCOPI’. In this issue - Group I, tentatively dated 805-810 - the moneyer is not identified. The reverse shows a cross crosslet within a linear circle, The legend reads ‘+DOROVERNIAE CIVTATIS’. On other examples we’ve seen this is rendered ‘CIVITATIS’ with a second ‘I’ after ‘CIV’ - it's not a variation mentioned in North. This coin weighs 1.3 grams and has a diameter of 19.7 millimetres. Grade: EF - Rich, dark patina with full flan and exceptionally clear legends and details - hard to find a better example: Extremely Fine. North 236, Spink 887.
