Third Issue hammered silver Threepence of Charles II. Obverse: left facing portrait of the king with value mark behind - ‘III’ (Threepence) - enclosed within beaded circle. Crown mint mark above. Legend reads: ‘CAROLVS · II · D · G · M · BR · FRA · ET · HI · REX’. Reverse: shield of royal arms quartered by a cross moline within a beaded circle. Crown mint mark and legend reading: ‘· CHRISTO · AVSPICE · REGNO ·’. This coin is one of the last hammered Threepences produced in England. The denomination had seen intermittent use through the late Tudor and early Stuart period but was not minted during the Interregnum. Undated milled Threepences would be issued after the Tower mint adopted new machinery under the direction of the French moneyer, Peter Blondeau. These would bear a similar design to their earlier hammered counterparts. This late hammered coin measures 19.8 millimetres in diameter and has a weight of 1.46 grams. Grade: GVF - Slightly irregular flan, attractively toned with excellent details for Good Very Fine. S 3325.
