1549 Edward VI Groat Posthumous Henry VIII Bristol MM TC

1549 Edward VI Groat Posthumous Henry VIII Bristol MM TC Obverse
£365.00
Posthumous Henry VIII hammered silver Groat, struck at Bristol during the reign of Edward VI. Early in Edward’s short time on the throne, between 1547 and 1551, his coinage bore the image and name of his late father. The obverse features the crowned and bearded bust - Bristol bust B - of Henry in three-quarters profile, surrounded by a beaded circle. The mint mark here is hard to decipher but the reverse mark is a clear conjoined ‘TC’ indicating that this Groat was struck while the Bristol Mint was under the control of Sir Thomas Chamberlain. He took over from the previous incumbent, William Sharington, in early 1649. Sharington had got himself tangled up in a plot masterminded by Thomas Seymour, 1st Baron Seymour of Sudeley to kidnap his nephew, the young Edward VI. Sharington would be found guilty of defrauding the Bristol Mint to fund this enterprise. The Bristol Mint, only opened in 1546, closed up shop after only ten months under Chamberlain’s rule so coins minted with his initials can be dated very precisely. As well as the TC mint mark the reverse also features a shield of royal arms, surrounded by a beaded circle and quartered by a long cross fourchee. Grade: VF - Even light tone on very good metal with excellent bust details - Very Fine or near so for type. These posthumous issues are as debased as those minted towards the end of Henry VIII’s reign and are, as such, hard to find in high grades, especially from the provincial mints. An interesting addition to any collection. Weight: 2.53 grams, diameter: 25.5 millimetres. Spink 2407.
