A scarce and collectable hammered silver groat of king Henry VIII, struck at the mint of Southwark between 1544 and 1547, part of his third coinage. In these final years of Henry VIII’s reign the quality of his gold and silver coinage was reduced by a state-sponsored currency debasement policy, the results of which came to be known as the ‘Great Debasement’. The obverse of this Groat features a type 2 facing, crowned, bearded bust within a beaded circle. No mint mark appears in the legend. The reverse shows a long cross fourchée over a shield of arms representing England and Scotland with the wording for London but with a small sideways ’S’ in the fork of the cross, representing the Southwark mint. The cross cuts through a beaded circle around the shield. Henry authorised a mint in the district of Southwark in around 1543 and this was set up at Suffolk Place. It had ceased to operated by the reign of his daughter, Mary I, when the building was demolished. These debased silver Groats that were produced in Southwark are hard to find in high grades and, even with its mild edge damage, this coin would make an excellent addition to any collection. Weight: 2.86 grams, diameter 26 millimetres. Grade: VF - Attractive light grey tone with good metal, slight edge unevenness at 3 o’clock, strong bust details: approaching very Fine. Spink 2371.
