Pre-Treaty Series C hammered gold Noble from King Edward III’s fourth coinage, dated 1351-1352. Obverse: Crowned figure, stand-in in a ship at sea, holding sword and shield of royal arms within a beaded circle. Legend clipped, featuring Lombardic 'M' and closed 'E', 'FRANC' visible. Reverse: cross with 'E' in the centre, limbs terminating in lis. Crowned lions in angles. Design enclosed by a treasure of arcs with lis in the angles, itself enclosed by a beaded circle. Legend clipped. Gold Nobles were introduced during Edward III's second coinage (1344-1346). At the time this coin was minted it would have been worth 6s 8d. This example dates from the period of Edward III's reign before the Treaty of Brétigny (1361) which ended the first phase of the Hundred Years War and endorsed substantial English territorial gains on the continent. In return, Edward gave up his claim to the French throne and this is reflected in the lack of any mention of France in the obverse legend on later coins. Earlier issues like this one proclaim Edward King of France. Weight: 6.34 grams. Grade: EF - Short on flan with some legend missing, otherwise an Extremely Fine example. References: likely S 1486.
