London mint, pre-treaty period class c hammered silver Penny of Edward III from the King’s fourth coinage. Obverse: cross 1 mint mark dates this piece to the years 1351-1352 and proceeded a legend that reads ‘EDWARDS REX ANGLI’. Center of the coin is occupied by a facing crown portrait of the King within a beaded circle. The reverse shows a long cross which quarters a beaded circle. Within each central segment can be seen three pellets with an annulet between each. The legend around reads ‘CIVI | TAS | LON | DON. The pre-treaty period encompasses the years 1351 to 1361, before the Treaty of Brétigny (1361) which ended the first phase of the Hundred Years War and endorsed substantial English territorial gains on the continent. In return, Edward gave up his claim to the French throne. The Treaty only bought nine years respite with the conflict resuming in 1369. Larger silver coins minted during the decade prior to the treaty retain Henry’s claim to the French title. Weight: 0.92 grams. Diameter: 17.5 millimetres. Grade: VF - Even, mid-grey tone on a circular flan, strong details with reverse cross showing on obverse: otherwise Very Fine. References: S 1584.
