A collectable hammered silver voided long cross Penny of King Henry the Third. Class 5g: struck at the Canterbury mint by the moneyer Robert. The obverse features a crowned forward-facing portrait of the king, holding a sceptre in his right hand. The reverse shows the voided long cross with three pellets in the quarters and the wording for Robert on Canterbury. The long cross or long-cross penny replaced the short cross in 1247: the middle of Henry III’s long reign. The new design making it more obvious when a coin had been clipped and made it easy to cut into halves or quarters. Spink 1373, North 997.
