from
£665.00
A superb hammered silver penny of king Cnut, struck sometime in the middle of his reign by the moneyer Bruninc at the mint of London. The obverse is the ‘pointed helmet’ type, featuring a bust of the king, facing left with a sceptre in front, wearing distinctive pointed headgear. The reverse shows a voided short cross, two circles around a central pellet int he centre with broken annulets with central pellets in the angles. Cnut - also spelt ‘Canute’ - was king of England from 1016 to his death in 1035. His accession to the Danish throne in 1018 and later military victories in Norway and Sweden expanded the so-called North Sea Empire and leant him the epithet ‘the Great’. This is an attractive relic of a remarkable reign. Spink 1158, North 787.
