Four Ducat coins were issued by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich) in Vienna in the latter half of the 19th century, throughout the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. After his death, these coins were restruck with a 1915 date
The obverse of these coins shows a portrait of Franz Joseph I and is inscribed 'FRANC · IOS · I · D · G · AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR'. Franz Joseph was Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary from 1848 until his death in 1916.
The reverse shows the double-headed Austro-Hungarian eagle with an orb and sceptre in its claws, a '(4)' below and 'HVNGAR · BOHEM · GAL · LOD · ILL · REX A · A · 1915' around. Both designs were engraved by Friedrich Leisek.
Gold Four Ducat coins are large and thin, measuring 40 millimetres in diameter with a thickness of about 0.7 millimetres. They are struck in just under 14 grams of .986 (23.75-carat) gold and have shiny background surfaces.
