Royal Mint Britannia Coins
Britannia has represented Britain on coinage for almost 2,000 years. First introduced by the Romans during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, the figure evolved into a lasting symbol of national identity and maritime strength. Since the reign of King Charles II, Britannia has appeared on the coinage of every British monarch, becoming one of the most recognisable motifs in British numismatics.
The Royal Mint launched the Britannia bullion series in gold in 1987, with silver following in 1997. Today, bullion Britannias are issued in gold, silver and platinum across a range of sizes. As UK legal tender, they offer Capital Gains Tax advantages for UK residents. Alongside bullion coins, proof Britannias provide a collectable counterpart, featuring annually changing designs created by leading artists.
The 2026 Britannia Range
The 2026 proof Britannia features a new design by American coin designer Emily S Damstra. Her interpretation shows Britannia facing into a strong wind, holding a trident and shield bearing the Union Jack, symbols long associated with the figure on British coinage.
Wave motifs on Britannia's helmet and a coastal setting with turbulent seas and a lighthouse reinforce the figure's connection to maritime defence while presenting a contemporary interpretation. The design highlights resilience, a theme that continues to define modern Britannia imagery.
The reverse includes the inscription - 'MAJESTY, JUSTICE AND PEACE' - taken from Sir Winston Churchill's address to the United States Congress in December 1941. Bullion Britannias for 2026 continue to feature Philip Nathan's classic 1987 depiction, maintaining continuity across the investment range.
The 2026 Britannia Collection
The 2026 Britannia collection includes both proof and bullion coins across multiple metals and sizes. Within the proof range, key denominations return, including the 1/10oz gold proof and individual 1oz and 2oz gold proof coins, expanding options for collectors.
Mintages are lower than previous years, increasing collectable appeal across the range. Alongside proof editions, the bullion series remains extensive, with fractional and one-ounce coins issued in silver, gold and platinum at a variety of price points.
This combination of investment bullion and annually updated proof designs ensures the Britannia series continues to appeal to both investors and collectors in 2026.
