Gold proof 1952 One Pond (£1) coin struck in the final year of George VI's reign. Other than the 1937 Sovereign, this and the 1/2 Pond of the same date are the only gold coins to bare George IV's portrait. These 22-carat gold South African coins are minted to the same specifications as a British 'full' Sovereign. The obverse features an iteration of Humphrey Paget's classic bare-head bust of George VI, with the reverse featuring a springbok design by Coert Steynberg. This engraving is today better known for its use on Krugerrands, South Africa's premier gold bullion coin. These 1952-dated £1 coins can be found in scarce 11-coin proof sets from the SA Mint and remain sought-after by collectors.
