Collectable 1906 Melbourne mint Sovereign (S 3971, Marsh 190). This gold Sovereign was struck during the reign of King Edward VII, who came to the throne in 1901 following the passing of his mother, Queen Victoria. An uncrowned portrait of Edward is shown on the obverse, designed by British medallist George William de Saulles. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the dragon design, created in 1817 for the first modern gold Sovereigns. Just above the date (1906) is a tiny 'M' mintmark, which identifies this 22-carat gold coin as having been struck at the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint in Victoria, Australia. 3,657,835 gold Sovereigns were issued by the Melbourne mint in 1906, and these coins remain sought after by both collectors and investors.
