2019 marked 75 years since over three million men gathered in Southern England to launch one of the most audacious seaborne assaults in history. The Royal Mint marked this special anniversary with the release of several Two Pound coins, with this edition being the base metal version struck to a high-quality brilliant uncirculated standard. On the 6th of June 1944, the militaries of Great Britain, the United States and Canada launched Operation Overlord: an attack on German-occupied France from the land, sea, and sky. Five beachheads were targeted by the Allied Forces, who codenamed the landing sites 'Utah', 'Omaha', 'Gold', 'Juno' and 'Sword'. Stephen Taylor's reverse design on this collectable coin captures this plan, showing five arrows thrusting onto the Normandy coastline. Approximately 160,000 Allied troops crossed the English Channel on D-Day, with an estimated 10,000 casualties. On the obverse to Taylor's design is Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the fifth official effigy used of her on circulating UK coinage. During production, the coin is struck twice to give its BU finish, which makes it a perfect collector's piece. It weighs 12.00 grams, measures 28.40 millimetres and is made from a cupro-nickel and nickel-brass alloy. It isn't the first D-Day coin to be issued by The Royal Mint: a 50p / Fifty Pence was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the landings. We'll supply your collectable £2 in a protective capsule, built into a stylised coin sleeve with details about the events leading up to and on 6 June 1944.
