Brilliant uncirculated Royal Navy Two Pound from The Royal Mint, part of a collection of UK coins released to mark the centenary of the First World War. The Royal Navy is the oldest of the UK's armed services and can trace its origins back to the early 16th century and the Age of Sail. By the mid-18th century, the British Navy was the undisputed ruler of the waves, playing a key role in exploring, expanding and defending the British Empire. On the outbreak of war in 1914, the Royal Navy was by far the world's most powerful Navy. The UK's main battlefleet, the Grand Fleet was mainly deployed close to home, its fighting advantage discouraging any sustained challenge to British dominance from the German High Seas Fleet, after the inconclusive Battle of Jutland in 1916. The Royal Navy also enacted a trade blockade, shutting of German access to the North Sea to stem the supply of food and war materials. A convoy system reduced the number of Allied ships being sunk by German U-Boats. Designed by David Rowlands, a notable military artist, this coin's reverse features a Dreadnought battleship at sea, the water choppy and birds and a seaplane flying overhead. Around the edge is an inscription that reads 'THE SURE SHIELD OF BRITAIN' in a fitting reminder of the role the Navy played in Britain's defence. On the obverse side of the coin, Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is seen; this is the fourth definitive effigy of Her Majesty. This pre-owned Two Pound coin weighs 12.00 grams, has a diameter of 28.40 millimetres and is issued in the original limited edition packaging from The Royal Mint
