The then Princess Elizabeth, daughter of king George VI and heir presumptive to the British throne, married Greek and Danish Prince, Philip Mountbatten on 20 November 1947. It was an occasion which lifted the spirits of a country which had endured long years of war. Fifty years later, celebrations for their golden wedding anniversary included a service at Westminster Abbey, a lunch at the Guildhall, a Gala Concert at the Royal Festival Hall and a Ball at Windsor Castle. In honour of the occasion, The Royal Mint released a series of commemorative coins, including this Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pound with two unique designs. The obverse depicts a joint portrait of The Queen and Prince Philip in a pose described as dignified and reflective. This design by Philip Nathan is reminiscent of earlier dual portraits of William and Mary, and Queen Victorian and Prince Albert. The reverse - designed by Leslie Durbin - shows a pair of shields featuring the Royal Arms and the Arms of the Duke of Edinburgh with a crown above and an anchor below. The crown, St Edward’s crown, is routinely worn by Her Majesty for state duties, while the anchor symbolises Prince Philip’s extensive career in the Royal Navy. Produced in the same cupro-nickel alloy as the coins in your change, this BU £5 is finished to a much higher standard to give a beautiful finish with every detail evident. Weighing the standard 28.28 grams with a diameter of 38.61 millimetres, this crown comes in its original presentation wallet with additional pictures and information about the Royal couple’s fifty year marriage.
