1994 marked the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France during the Second World War. To commemorate the occasion the Royal Mint released a set of collectable Fifty Pence coins. During the spring of 1944, over three million men gathered in Southern England, forming one of the biggest ever seaborne invasion forces. The militaries of Britain, the United States and Canada combined to attack Nazi-occupied France from the land, sea, and sky on 6 June 1944 under Operation Overlord. What is most notable about this UK 50p coin design is that it is the work of someone who had childhood memories of the event occurring - John Mills. He imagines the planes and the ships as they were on that damp morning in June 1944, heading into the battle zone over the horizon. On the obverse to Mills' design is Raphael Maklouf's popular portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the third official effigy used on circulating coinage. During production, the coin is struck twice to give a brilliant uncirculated finish, which makes a perfect collector's piece. It weighs 13.50 grams, measures 30.00 millimetres and is made from a cupronickel alloy. This UK coin is the last 50 Pence piece to be issued with a commemorative design before the dimensions were made smaller in 1997. The larger 50p coins were demonetised in 1998. This coin comes in a protective capsule, built into an informative coin sleeve with details about the events leading up to and on 6 June 1944.
