For the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of children’s author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter, The Royal Mint released a series of four Fifty Pence pieces depicting four of her most popular characters: Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, and this portrait of the cheeky Squirrel Nutkin. The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin was originally written as an illustrated story letter for the children of her friend, and former governess, after Beatrix Potter spent the summer of 1901 in the Lake District, observing a colony of red squirrels. In her story, Nutkin and his siblings adventure to Owl Island where they happily collect nuts until Nutkin pushes the resident Old Brown a little too far. Although best known for her ‘Little Tales’, Beatrix Potter was also a well respected mycologist, renown for her watercolours of fungi. She invested her funds into buying and conserving land and property in her beloved Lake District, the majority of which was gifted to the National Trust after her death in 1943. This Fifty Pence features a colourful design by Emma Noble on the reverse depicting Squirrel Nutkin dancing. The other side shows Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, the fifth official effigy used. This 50 pence coin comes with its numbered certificate of authenticity and is struck in 8.00 grams of .925 sterling silver. Presented in its original acrylic presentation case and accompanied by a booklet containing additional information about the author and her characters, it is one of 14,893 in this format.
